July 25 | Space Education and Research Foundation, Ahmedabad announces, a “Conference on Physics Education”. This will be an online conference. It is scheduled to be live Starting on 21st September 2020. It is envisaged to have in each session one resource presentation (1 hour) and 4 contributory presentations. This conference would be like a training program for physics teachers with a difference. The learning, here, is planned to be in two ways: 1. From each other’s presentations 2. From resource talks Now, we invite contributory presenters for the conference. The duration of the contributory presentations will be minimum 15 min and maximum 30 min. Please submit your title and abstracts based on the following categories: 1. Basic concepts in Physics 2. Lucid description of an experiment 3. Clear theoretical explanation 4. However, people are encouraged to step out of their houses to watch the Supermoon, especially at sunset, when the Moon looks like a huge smiling ball. |

Audience were told that this day the planet Venusgets farthest from the Sun in the east ( pprox.. 460 as viewed from earth). This is the best time to view Venus since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky. The proposed workshop on “Elongation, Conjunction and Opposition” of planets and about ancient methods of reading the stars and planets, was also cancelled. |

Audience were told that it occurred at 09:19 AM, IST, in India. The Sun shone directly on the equator and there would be nearly equal amounts of day and night throughout the world. This was also the first day of spring (Vernal Equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of fall (Autumnal Equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere |
Mar 14 | International Pi day | The event was cancelled due to corona Pandemic. But a limited online hangoutwas organized on the works of Aryabhat– the great Indian mathematician and physicist born in 476 AD in Patliputra, who gave the approximate value of “Pi”. |
Mar 14 | Birthday of Albert Einstein (1879) | The proposed Workshop on “modern Relativity and Quantum Physics and their parallels in ancient Indian science” was cancelled due to the corona pandemic. |
Feb 28 | DNA discovery (1953) | VIPRA organized a workshop on the basics of Genetic Science in the memory of the great discovery by James Watson of the United States and Francis Crick of England. The two scientists found the double-helix structure of DNA. In 1962, they were awarded the Nobel Prize for this work. |
March 9 | Full Moon, Supermoon. | A limited event was organized to watch the supermoon due to the corona spread apprehensions. The Moon was located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face was fully illuminated. This was the second of four supermoons for 2020. The Moon was at its closest approach to the Earth and looked slightly larger and brighter than usual. |
Feb 28 | National Science Day of India | VIPRA organized a workshop on the topic “Physics of Light” to celebrate National Science Day and to commemorate the discovery of “Raman Effect” by Nobel Laureate and Indian physicist Sir C.V Raman. |
Feb 23 | New Moon. | VIPRA organized the event “Joy of a Dark Sky” to study galaxies and clusters. The Moon waslocated on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and was not be visible in the night sky. Audience got to know as to how this was the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters (because there was no moonlight to interfere). |
Feb 11 | Thomas Alva Edison Birthday (1847) | VIPRA organized a workshop about the works of Thomas Alva Edison. One of the greatest inventors, he invented the Light Bulb, the Phonograph (for sound recording) and the Motion Picture camera. He is considered a great inspiration to any budding inventor. |

Jan 12 | Birthday of Swami Vivekananda | Vivekananda is fondly remembered as a youth icon who gave the message to develop logic and empathy. VIPRA celebrated the “National Youth Day” by creating awareness for developing scientific temper among the youth and the role of VIPRA towards this objective. |
Jan 10 | Penumbral Lunar Eclipse | VIPRA organized a workshop “Moon and Human Biology”. The meaning of Penumbral Lunar Eclipse was first explained. It occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth’s partial shadow, or penumbra. During this type of eclipse the Moon will darken slightly but not completely. This was the 1st such eclipse of 2020. Dr. Indu Kaushik, M.D, told the audience about the effects the moon has on human mind and body. |
Jan 4 | Issac Newton birthday (1643) | Newton gave the Laws of Motion and the Laws of Gravitation. VIPRA organized a workshop on the principles given by Newton and its parallels found in Indian texts. Practical experiments were also conducted to demonstrate Newton’s laws. A child narrated the early upbringing and schooling of Newton. |
Jan 3-7 | 107th Indian National Science Congress (at Bangalore) Theme: Science & Technology for Rural Development | An introductory session about the scope and activities of INSC was held on 2nd Jan 2020 It was decided to explore the possibility of sending a VIPRA nominee to the 108th congress. |
Jan 3-4 | January 3, 4 – Quadrantids Meteor Shower. | VIPRA organized an event on 3 – 4 January to witness the shower. The Quadrantids is an above average shower, with up to 40 meteors per hour at its peak. It is thought to be produced by dust grains left behind by an extinct comet known as 2003 EH1, which was discovered in 2003. The shower runs annually from January 1-5. It peaks this year on the night of the 3rd and morning of the 4th. The first quarter moon will set shortly after midnight, leaving fairly dark skies for what could be a good show. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Bootes, but can appear anywhere in the sky. |
Jan 1 | Satyendra Nath Bose birthday (1894) (Indian Govt. celebrated his 125th birth anniversary in 2018-19) | VIPRA organized a Workshop and discussed: i. The works of S.N Bose ii. About S.N Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata iii. Latest trends in Quantum Mechanics. iv. References toQuantum Mechanics in ancient Indian texts. The class of particles that obey Bose–Einstein statistics, Bosons, was named after Bose (by Paul Dirac, himself a renowned physicist). A polymath, he had a wide range of interests in varied fields including physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, mineralogy, philosophy, arts, literature, and music. He served on many research and development committees in sovereign India. |
